Imagine you have finally realized your dream. It’s taken years of training and preparation, with many tears and even fears along the way. But you made it! You’re finally in the land where you’ve long desired to be to bring the love of God to the people, perhaps so they can hear about it for the first time. After the “honeymoon” phase of experiencing all the newness of this place, culture shock sets in.

You’ve been told that would inevitably come, so you expect it. Though you may feel like you’re barely surviving, you are also thriving because this is where you’re meant to be. Then it hits you. The unexpected. It might be stress within your team or unrealized struggles in your marriage. Maybe it’s a feeling of isolation both from other ex-pats and also loved ones back home (i.e. passport country), creating excruciating pangs of loneliness. Worst of all, you begin to forget “the why” that compelled you to embark on this adventure.

You’re devastated and despite the guilt you feel, all you want to do is leave.
